What is Bokeh?

For those new into photography like me, you may have already heard or encountered the term “bokeh”. So You may have encountered this term already and would have been clueless too like I was when I first heard it. So what does Bokeh exactly means?

Wikipedia defines it as “a photographic term referring to the appearance of point of light sources in an out-of-focus area of an image produced by a camera lens using a shallow depth of field. Different lens bokeh produces different aesthetic qualities in out-of-focus backgrounds, which are often used to reduce distractions and emphasize the primary subject.” It is derived from a Japanese term, boke, which means “blur” or “haze”. In simpler terms, it refers to the blurry part or the out of focus backgrounds of a photo.

In this photo, take note how blurred the background flowers are made to pop out and focus the hanging blue bottles. That’s bokeh. This photo was taken using our Nikky’s kit lens (18-55mm).
